Michigan Tech University’s Story

Michigan Technological University is a public research university founded in 1885. Michigan Tech’s main campus sits on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula with sweeping views of the Keweenaw Waterway and is just miles away from Lake Superior. The university offers over 120 undergraduate and graduate degrees to their student body of just over 7,000.

When their previous map solution wasn’t helping them reach their admissions or student engagement goals, the Michigan Tech team knew they needed to move onto a more interactive map tool. Luckily, Concept3D was there to heed the call.

The biggest challenge Michigan Tech faced was meeting their admissions goals and enhancing student engagement. Before finding Concept3D, Michigan Tech’s previous solutions were untrackable and the team had no way to understand their roles in their own goals or in students’ early school lifecycle.

The solution’s intuitive CMS allows Michigan Tech to use the map throughout the application, admissions, and enrollment processes and gauge what students interact with the most across campus.

How Michigan Tech University is using the Interactive Map

Michigan Tech University knows their Interactive Map is a reliable way to understand student activity before, during, and after prospects physically come to campus. In July 2020, Michigan Tech embedded a Slate form in their Concept3D Interactive Map; Slate provides a Request for Information (RFI) form that Michigan Tech embedded into their map. This tracking method helps the marketing and admissions teams see how their Interactive Map engages prospective students and families.

Launched in March 2019, Michigan Technological University has seen tremendous success with their Interactive Map. Parents began sharing it in the move-in category in their Facebook group within hours of its publication and before it was even announced.

The best part? Michigan Tech saw at least a 15x ROI after implementing their Interactive Campus Map with 21 students converting from the map.

Within nine months of its implementation, the RFI form in the Interactive Map reached a 4% conversion rate, exceeding expectations and industry benchmarks. 32% of those submissions were a prospective student’s first touch with Michigan Tech.

Families are also looking for information regarding the school through the Interactive Map, accounting for 22% of the form submissions. Beyond being a powerful gateway to Michigan Tech, the campus map also serves as a support tool for friends and families of students.
